Hsiung Tsai was one of Lehigh's earliest and most successful international students. In 1914, the Chinese government sent him to the U.S. to receive an education in mining engineering. He spent one year at Andover Preparatory School before enrolling at Lehigh. Mr. Tsai graduated in 1919 with a degree in mining engineering. He was involved in numerous activities at Lehigh, including Treasurer of the Eastern Section of the Chinese Students' Alliance in the U.S., a member of Phi Beta Kappa honors society, manager of the Chinese Students' Club, and a member of the tennis squad.
A few years following graduation, Tsai became manager of the engineering department of the Chung Wei Trading Corporation and manager of the Sun May Machine Works in Shanghai. In 1937, he was appointed General Manager of Mayar Silk Mills, Ltd. in Shanghai. A decade later, he returned to the U.S. with the company, managing operations in New York City. In 1956, he was sent to Mayar's Hong Kong facility where he later became Managing Director in 1971. Tsai died in 1977.
Marjorie Yang is Tsai's granddaughter and an MIT alumna. She is CEO of Esquel Enterprises, Ltd. in Hong Kong.
