Dr. Stephen S. Tang was appointed President and CEO of The University City Science Center in January 2008. His appointment came after the Philadelphia-based center's nationwide search for a candidate to lead the Science Center in its efforts to transform the Greater Philadelphia region's high-technology commercialization activities. The Science Center is the oldest and largest urban research park and business incubator in the United States. As a 501(c)3 non-profit company, the Science Center is owned by over 30 leading universities , medical schools, and health networks (including Lehigh University) in Greater Philadelphia.

[edit] Career Highlights
Previously, Steve had joined Olympus America Inc. in 2005 as Vice President of Life Science Business Development. In this role, he led market development, mergers, acquisitions, alliances and strategic planning in these same business areas. Under his leadership, Olympus America consummated its first technology-based acquisition by purchasing Bacus Laboratories, Inc—a leading telepathology company. In 2006, he became Olympus America’s first Group Vice President for Life Science, leading the North American organization of Olympus’ $1 billion global businesses in precision microscopes, in vitro diagnostics, and translational research instruments.
Prior to Olympus, Steve was President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Millennium Cell Inc., a NJ-based energy technology firm that he led from 2000 to 2004 through its initial public offering and early commercialization challenges.
Before his work at Millennium Cell, he served as Vice President and Managing Director of the global pharmaceutical and healthcare practice of A.T. Kearney Inc. from 1996 to 2000. From 1992 to 1996, he was first a principal, and then Vice President and Co-Managing Director of the global chemical and environmental practice for Gemini Consulting Inc., now known as Cap Gemini. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Director and Senior Research Engineer at the Lehigh University Center for Molecular Bioscience and Biotechnology. While still in graduate school in 1986, he founded his first company, a technology assessment consulting firm called Tangent Technologies, which he owned and operated until 1992.

Dr. Tang received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University. He also earned a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

In September 2003, He was featured as a member of Forbes magazine's fifth annual "E-Gang" as an "unsung hero" of wireless technology. Dr. Tang is the author of many print articles of topics ranging from consumer acceptance of emerging technology to best practices in strategic planning. One of these pieces appeared in the Op Ed section in The Wall Street Journal on February 26, 2003 entitled “Uneasy Rider.”
He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Association of University Technology Managers, Association of University Research Parks, Society of Biological Engineering, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and Society of Molecular Imaging. He previously served on Lehigh University’s Engineering Advisory Board from 1998-2000.
Dr. Tang and his family have been residents of the Lehigh Valley since 1982.
