Colden L'Hommedieu Ruggles had a impressive career with the U.S. Army, earning him the rank of Brigadier General in 1923. Later he received the Distinguished Service Medal and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1890 Ruggles graduated from West Point, after which he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant of Artillery. Shortly aferward he married Mary Appleton, daughter of Brigadier General Miller. When he became an Inspector for Bethlehem Steel Company in 1900, he also attended Lehigh University. Ruggles graduated from Lehigh with a BS in mechanical engineering in 1903.
Ruggles was a Professor of Ordnance an Science of Gunnery at West Point from 1908-1911 after which he served as the Commanding Arsenal and Ordnance Officer, Western Department for the next three years. During this time, he wrote and published a textbook (in 1916) titled: Stresses in Wire-wrapped Guns and in Gun Carriages. He established the Aberdeen Proving Ground as a military base in 1917. He also attended classes and graduated from the Army War College in 1922. He moved up the ranks for the next few years until he was awarded the position of Brigadier General in March, 1923. For his long ordnance service to the army, Ruggles received the Distintguished Service Medal and the Ordnance Medal of Merit.
