Masayoshi Nakashima currently serves as the director of the National Research Institute for Earth Science at Kyoto University, Japan. Nakashima is also a civil engineering professor at the University.

Prior to earning his Ph.D. in civil engineering at Lehigh University in 1981, Nakashima earned both his B.S. and M.S. in architectural engineering from Kyoto University. After serving as a research Engineer to the Building Research Institute of the Japanese Ministry of Construction, Nakashima returned to Kyoto as a faculty member.

Nakashima’s research subjects include the quantification of complete failure of building structures and reliability-based seismic design. He is the editor of International Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics and contributes to the publication regularly.
