Jean-Claude Badoux earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1965 after receiving his EPFZ degree at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 1958 and a further degree at the Technical University in Hannover, Germany in 1960.
From 1958-1967 Badoux was involved in design and construction projects for private firms as well as the American Government. Since 1967 he has been Technical Advisor and Expert for over one hundred construction projects in Switzerland and other countries. Dr. Badoux has been investigation expert for several structural failures and construction accidents and arbitrator in many complex plants and installations.
From 1992 to 2000 he was President of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland and has also served as President of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences, the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects, and the Swiss Network of Innovation of which he was a founding member. He is a current Vice-President on the executive council of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Engineering (FINAE) and Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineering(FASCE).
In addition to his industry experience Badoux has also been active in academia. He has taught and researched at Lehigh University, the University of California at Davis and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland. In September 2007 he was awarded the Anton Tedesko Medal 2007 by the IABSE Foundation Council in recognition of his dedication to excellence in structural engineering and his role as mentor for younger engineers.
