[edit] Corporate Postings
Amelio became CEO of Lenovo on December 20, 2005. He joined Lenovo from Dell Inc. where since 2001 he served as senior vice president, Asia-Pacific and Japan, with responsibility for strategy and operations across the region. During his tenure, sales more than doubled in the region and service levels improved significantly, as measured by third-party customer satisfaction metrics.
From 2000 until 2001, Amelio was executive vice president and chief operating officer of NCR Corporation's Retail and Financial Group, one of its two businesses. From 1997 to 2000, he was with Honeywell International Inc. and its predecessor, AlliedSignal Inc., where he was president and CEO of Honeywell's transportation and power-systems divisions, and head of the turbocharging-systems business at Allied Signal. The turbocharging-systems business doubled in revenues to more than $1,000 million, implemented Six Sigma and SAP, and successfully integrated acquisitions. From 1979 to 1997, Amelio was with IBM, where he held a wide range of senior management positions, including general manager of Operations for IBM's Personal Computing Division.
[edit] Education
William Amelio has a master's degree in management from the Sloan Master's Program at Stanford University and a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University.
[edit] Philanthropy
Through the Amelio Foundation, Bill and his wife Jamie founded Caring for Cambodia in 2003, a non-profit organization focused on education. The charitable organization now supports five thousand Cambodian children and ninety teachers by building schools, libraries, water wells and homes for needy families, and providing professional training to teachers. Lenovo executives are involved with the foundation at a very grass roots level and teams of top executives have traveled to Cambodia to help with construction of the schools.
[edit] Awards
Lehigh University presented Amelio with an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering in 2008.
